PSEKA PRESS RELEASE: Astoria, NY -- A call to action to support Congressman Eliot Engel has gone out to the Greek American community by Mr. Philip Christopher, President of the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus.
The text of Mr. Christopher's letter follows below:
Dear Friend:
I would like to ask for your help in supporting one of our good friends in Congress.
There is just about no one in House of Representatives who has produced more for Cyprus than Congressman Eliot Engel.
In his 14 years in Congress, he has taken every opportunity to promote Cyprus and other Hellenic issues. Eliot is the author of the Missing in Cyprus legislation, signed into law by President Clinton, which resulted in the finding of the remains of 17-year-old Andy Kassapis, murdered by the Turkish army and missing since 1974. He also authored H.Con.Res. 42, which called for the demilitarization of Cyprus, an idea originally put forward by Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides. This past summer, Eliot joined us in Cyprus with other members of Congress, where they visited the Green Line and spoke with government officials.
Congressman Engel serves on the crucial European Affairs Subcommittee of the House International Relations Committee. He has been very helpful in the issue of the Greek minority in Albania from his position as Chairman of the Congressional Caucus on Albanian issues.
It is important that we raise funds to support Eliot's reelection campaign. Due to the September 11th World Trade Center attack, we cancelled his fundraising event which was scheduled for early October. I ask you to help out by sending a contribution payable to "Eliot Engel for Congress" to: PSEKA, 23-15 31st Street, Astoria, NY 11105 (Please note that corporate checks cannot be accepted and contributions are not tax deductible.)
Eliot has been a true friend to our community; we need to support him in his time of need. I encourage you to send your donation by December 31st.
