Nicosia, Feb 20 (Cyprus News Agency) - The Greek Cypriot Social Democrats Movement (KISOS) and the Turkish Cypriot Communal Liberation Party (TKP) agree that every effort should be made to reach a just solution to the Cyprus problem as soon as possible.

KISOS President Yiannakis Omirou and the leader of TKP Husein Agulemli, heading delegations, met this morning in Nicosia. Speaking after the meeting, Omirou said a solution should be based on UN resolutions and Agulemli noted that there had never been a similar opportunity for a settlement.

Omirou also expressed the readiness of KISOS to promote contacts with Turkish Cypriot progressive parties and organisations, because this cooperation could be the basis "for finding a solution, which will be long-lived". He added that "a settlement should be based on UN resolutions, the high level agreements of 1977 and 1979 and the acquis communautaire," noting that "relations of trust and understanding between the two communities" are a "necessary prerequisite" for a solution.

Omirou said that "within the framework of a new understanding of the future of Cyprus and its people, we can build a new vision of a common homeland, a prosperous peaceful homeland, within the context of the European Union." In his remarks through an interpreter, Agulemli said his party always supports peace and that "after so many years we are face-to-face with an opportunity and we have to catch this opportunity and I don't think we will have another opportunity as strong as this one." Agulemli said "as a party we have been doing everything we can for a solution and today this meeting aims at the same purpose because we share the same universal values with KISOS and we will take this relation even further until we arrive to a solution on the island."

He also wished "a prosperous and happy future in these face-to-face talks," which began on January 16 between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
