Nicosia, Nov 15 (CNA) – Political parties and various organizations, with statements and declarations, pronounce their opposition to the illegal UDI (unilateral declaration of independence) by the Turkish Cypriot regime, 23 years ago.
A number of events are scheduled to take place on Wednesday denouncing the occupation and proclamation of the illegal regime on November 15, 1983.
The Pancyprian Federation of Students Unions (POFEN) is organizing an anti-occupation gathering at Eleftheria Sports Centre in Nicosia which will include a concert by famous Greek singer George Dalaras.
On Wednesday evening, left-wing AKEL party is organizing a rally at the Orfeas checkpoint with main speaker the party’s General Secretary Demetris Christofias.
Socialist EDEK is also organizing an event to condemn the illegal UDI and mark the students’ uprising in Greece against the military junta on November 17 1973. Keynote speakers will be EDEK leader Yiannakis Omirou and Greek opposition PASOK deputy Christos Papoutsis.
In London, there will be a demonstration outside the Turkish embassy this afternoon against the Turkish Cypriot UDI.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island’s northern third.
The Turkish Cypriot UDI was declared ''legally invalid'' by UN Security Council resolution 541 of November 1983, which called on all states not to recognise the self-styled regime and not to facilitate it in any way.
Only Turkey recognises the Turkish Cypriot regime.
